01Overview

What is PCI DSS?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is the security standard set by the card brands for any organisation that stores, processes or transmits cardholder data. Version 4.0.1 organises its requirements into twelve principal requirements and has been the only valid version since 31 December 2024, with its future-dated requirements mandatory from 31 March 2025.

Compliance is validated according to how many transactions you handle and how you handle them: a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) report on compliance for the largest, or a self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ) for many merchants. Acquirers and card brands set the level.

The cheapest way to comply is to touch less card data. Hosted payment pages, tokenisation and segmentation can shrink the cardholder data environment dramatically.

05Saudi Arabia and the GCC

PCI DSS alongside Saudi payment rules

Card security meets the local payments ecosystem.

  • Schemes

    mada and international schemes

Card acceptance in the Kingdom involves mada and international networks. Acquirers set validation requirements.

  • SAMA

    SAMA and the payments law

Payment service providers face SAMA licensing and cyber requirements in addition to PCI DSS.

  • Efficiency

    Overlap with other frameworks

Many PCI controls match NCA ECC, SAMA CSF and ISO 27001. We map them to avoid duplicate work.

Retail and e-commerce groupPCI DSS compliance

PCI DSS scope reduction for a retail group

Card data touched more systems than anyone realised, which made validation slow and expensive.

  • Mapped card-data flows
  • Tokenised and segmented to shrink the scope
  • Remediated gaps ahead of the assessment

Result: A smaller scope and a smoother assessment.

Tier-1 Saudi bankRed team exercise

A threat-led red team exercise for a bank

The bank needed evidence that its people, processes and detection would hold up against a realistic attacker, in line with SAMA expectations.

  • Agreed rules of engagement and a threat scenario with the CISO
  • Ran a controlled exercise against production systems
  • Ran a purple team workshop so defenders could see every step

Result: Detection gaps were fixed, playbooks were updated and the board received a plain-language report.

National energy operatorOT security assessment

OT assessment and segmentation for an energy operator

Plant networks had grown without a clear map, and remote access for vendors was a concern.

  • Passive discovery of OT assets without touching production
  • Purdue-model segmentation design and industrial firewall rules
  • Secure remote access for vendors with session recording

Result: A mapped, segmented network with a prioritised remediation plan the plant team could schedule.

09Questions answered

PCI DSS FAQs

What is PCI DSS v4.0.1?

The current version of the payment card industry data security standard. It was published in June 2024 as a limited revision of v4.0, and is the only valid version since 31 December 2024.

Who must comply with PCI DSS?

Any organisation that stores, processes or transmits cardholder data, or can affect its security, including merchants, payment providers and fintechs.

Do I need a QSA?

Larger merchants and service providers usually need a Qualified Security Assessor. Smaller merchants may complete a self-assessment questionnaire. Your acquirer or card brand decides.

How can I reduce PCI scope?

By using hosted payment pages, tokenisation and point-to-point encryption, and segmenting networks, so fewer systems touch card data.

What changed in version 4.0?

New and updated requirements include multi-factor authentication into the cardholder environment, payment page script controls and targeted risk analyses, many of which became mandatory on 31 March 2025.

How long does PCI DSS take?

Six to twelve months for most organisations starting from a moderate baseline.

Do you provide penetration testing for PCI?

Yes. Our testing team performs internal, external and segmentation tests that satisfy requirement 11.
